S’it Eetí G̱eeyí The Bay In Place of the Glacier taken in front of Marjorie Glacier in Glacier Bay
Winner of Sealaska Heritage Institute’s biennial Juried Art Show 2024 Best of Beading S’it Eetí G̱eeyí The Bay In Place of the Glacier This Octopus bag tells the story of my clan, of my namesake, Kaasteen, the woman that called the glacier. The people of Hoonah originally resided in what is now called Glacier Bay National Park. Then Kaasteen called the glacier, causing it to advance upon our village and forcing us to relocate. Years later, after the glacier receded, it formed a bay which we now call S’it Eetí G̱eeyí “The Bay in Place of the Glacier”. Kaasteen is represented by the red formline face in the middle, the glacier is in the icy forms on top, and the bay is in the middle that became murky as the glacier advanced causing the ground to shake. The wool was hand dyed ombré blue showing the transformation of glacier to bay.
